Did you get the feeling Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes wouldn't last when he proclaimed his love while jumping on Oprah's couch?
Well, they did make it five years -- more than a lot of Hollywood couples. But now they're caput.
The details of the divorce have now all been hammered out.
The proceedings moved quicker than a "Top Gun" fighter jet.
The case settled Monday -- the papers are all signed.
Holmes filed for divorce less than two weeks ago, and seems to have gotten exactly what she wanted.
The terms of the divorce settlement have not been released, but several reports cite sources who say Holmes will have primary custody of the couple's daughter Suri, and the deal has strict rules about Cruise exposing Suri to the beliefs and practices of Scientology.
The deal doesn't seem totally one-sided.
TMZ has had the most detailed reporting we've seen.
It says while Holmes will get primary custody of Suri, Cruise will get significant custodial time as well.
Reports that Holmes' bodyguard will monitor during visits are said to be false.
But TMZ says there are extremely detailed restrictions on both parents about exposing Suri to, or even talking with her about, Scientology and religion in general.
However, the restrictions are said to ease over time, as Suri gets older.
Perhaps the goal is to let her make up her own mind about religion, when she's an adult.
We spoke about the settlement with divorce attorney Eunice Ward. She cited three main reasons a case like this might settle so quickly.
One: both sides are savvy. Holmes' father is an attorney, and Cruise had twice been divorced before. They all know how ugly and grueling divorce wars are.
The second reason is there could be dirty laundry between the couple -- things each of them don't want to be made public in court.
And third: Holmes had a good game plan. She knew what she wanted. And she made it very clear she was serious.
Ward says Holmes' legal plan let Cruise know from the get-go exactly what he was up against, and thus gave him -- and everyone -- a chance to get into settlement talks quickly.
