CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 16-year-old boy died Friday after he was pulled out of Lake Michigan by a Chicago Fire Department rescue unit.

Romero Roundtree, of the 3900 block of South Lake Park Avenue, was found in the lake Thursday about 10 p.m. near 39th Street, authorities said.

The boy was found in "very poor condition" and taken in serious-to-critical condition to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, according to a Fire Department spokesman.

The boy was later pronounced dead on Friday at 5:32 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The Fire Department deployed a full water rescue unit, which included a helicopter and a dive team, Fire Media Affairs said.
