Target to open in historic Carson Pirie Scott building

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Who can forget the big fuss when Macy's took over Marshall Field's just a few blocks away, back in 2006.

A very dedicated group of folks have tried over the years --- in vain -- to get Macy's out and Marshall Field's back in.

So in our Talker question for Tuesday: Do you like the idea of a "big box" store, a target store, in the old Carson Pirie Scott building?

The original building at State and Madison, "the Sullivan Center", was built following the great Chicago fire of 1971.It was designed by famed architect Louis Sullivan, and completed in 1906.

It was designed for retail, and that's exactly what it was used for until 2007, when Carson Pirie Scott closed up shop for good.

City and state historic officials had a hand in re-vamping of the building for target, specifically making sure those Sullivan-designed intricate facades on the north side of the building stayed intact, along with the original interior columns.
