A Chicago alderman is blocking Chick-fil-A expansion plans because of the company president's stance on gay rights.

Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) announced this week that he's blocking the restaurant's expansion into Logan Square because of President Dan Cathy's recent remarks against gay marriage.

Before Wednesday's City Council meeting, Alderman Joe Moreno said he's tried to work with the company for months but Chick-fil-A won't put its stated anti-discrimination policy into writing.

The issue came to a head last week after Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy said he doesn't support same-sex marriage. Chick-fil-A said it has a history of applying biblically-based principles to its business, such as closing stores on Sundays.

"We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that," Cathy told the Baptist Press.

The chain has one Chicago restaurant but wants to put another in the city's Logan Square neighborhood. That's the area Moreno represents, and he said the restaurant can't move forward until he introduces an ordinance to divide the land involved.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel agrees with the decision, saying that "Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values."
