CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Lake Forest swimmer Matt Grevers set an Olympic record to win the men's 100-meter backstroke at the London Olympics on Monday.

Grevers finished in 52.16 seconds, 0.38 ahead of the previous mark set by fellow American Aaron Peirsol at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Nick Thoman, another American, was second in 52.92, and Ryosuke Irie of Japan was third in 52.97.

Grevers grew up in Lake Forest and helped bring a state championship to Lake Forest High School before going to swim at Northwestern.

Grevers' former swim club coach Michael Lawrence is very proud of his former pupil.

Matt Grevers is also quite the physical specimen. He's 6 ft. 7 in., wears a size 17 shoe and has paddles for hands.

Among his other accomplishments, Grevers also took home the Gold medal at the Missouri Grand Prix on February 11, 2012.

After the medal presentation he brought his girlfriend, Annie Chandler, up to the podium with him to celebrate the win. Then he dropped to one knee and proposed, shocking his girlfriend and the crowd.

Grevers wanted a unique proposal.
