CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
The Chicago Teachers Union is one step closer to going on strike.
Union President Karen Lewis told teachers Thursday to prepare to strike, saying that there is "no chance" that a new contract will be established by Monday.
Classes begin on Monday for about 1/3 of the school system (Track E) on year-round school schedules.
Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard said that he's still hopeful.
Brizard joined Good Day Chicago on Friday morning, saying that he recently spoke with many enthusiastic teachers, who are eager and excited for the school year to begin.
He said that after 40 or so days of negotiation, the district and union are making progress. They have not gotten through all the issues they wanted to, but he is optimistic in their ability to come to a fair agreement.
