CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man is dead after the car he was driving collided with a CTA bus on the Northwest Side Saturday morning.

Jose Barrueta died after the crash that took place about 6:10 a.m. at Diversey and Albany avenues, according to authorities.

The CTA No. 76 Diversey bus was eastbound on Diversey when a car that was southbound on Albany turned into the path of the bus, CTA spokesman Steve Mayberry said. The 2009 Toyota Scion, now westbound in the eastbound lanes, struck the bus, police said.

Barrueta, who was behind the wheel of the car, had to be cut out of the wreckage, authorities said. Paramedics took him in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 10:32 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Barrueta was believed to be in his 20s, but his exact age and home address were not immediately available Saturday evening.

There were eight passengers on the bus, and all refused treatment by paramedics, police said. Neither the bus operator nor any passengers on the bus were injured, Mayberry said.

The bus was taken to the CTA's Chicago Avenue garage and the No. 76 Diversey buses were rerouted around that area for two hours and 45 minutes.

By about 10 a.m. the reroute was over and service on the route was back to normal.
