CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A cab fatally struck one pedestrian and critically injured two others Tuesday morning in the River West neighborhood.

The crash happened at 6:07 a.m. at North Milwaukee and West Chicago avenues, police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.

Dan Faraci, a witness to the accident, helped the passenger and cab driver.

"I was coming back from work on Milwaukee Ave. I saw the cab. I saw him hit the light pole and flipped four times, and landed where he's at."

Eric Kerestes, 30, of the 600 block of North Racine Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:35 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Originally from downstate Bloomington, Kerestes was married and studying for his MBA at the University of Chicago while working at Kiewit Eastern District, according to a family spokesperson.

Kiewit Eastern District specializes in performing heavy construction such as tunnels, bridges and reservoirs, according to the company website.

He received his bachelors and masters degrees in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Champaign.

Two people were taken from the scene in critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs. One went to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and another was sent to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The cab struck a pole during the crash.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating. The driver is reportedly saying his vehicle malfunctioned. Police are looking into that claim.
