Fatal crash in Geneva involves motorcycle and semi

A 27-year-old northwest suburban man was killed Wednesday morning when the motorcycle he was riding crashed at a high rate of speed into a semi truck near west suburban Geneva.
Kane County Sheriff's deputies and Geneva Fire Department personnel responded at about 7 a.m. to a crash at the intersection of Kirk Road and Cherry Lane in Geneva Township, a release from the sheriff's office said.
A Freightliner semi was turning from the entrance to Cougars Stadium on Cherry Lane to go north onto Kirk Road with a green light, police said. A Suzuki GSX motorcycle, traveling south on Kirk Road at a high rate of speed, failed to stop and struck the side of the trailer.
The driver of the motorcycle, Eric Mondragon of Elgin, was thrown from the motorcycle and the bike continued about 200 yards past the intersection before it stopped, the release said.
Mondragon, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi, a 50-year-old man from Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., was uninjured.
Kirk Road was closed for more than 3 hours while the crash was investigated.
Police said it does not appear drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, but excessive speed does appear to have been a factor. No tickets were issued.
