Today Illinois legislators walked out of the capitol without making any progress on the state's massive pension crisis.
They adjourned their special session without even passing a symbolic measure to cut their own benefits. That bill would have slowed the growth in current pensions and eliminated pensions for future lawmakers.
"I think there's a lot of explaining to do to the people and voters back home, if the Illinois house of Representatives is voting ‘no ‘on something as fundamental as reforming their own public pension system," Governor Quinn said.
For decades now, the state has failed to put enough money in pension funds to actually pay for benefits and Illinois is now about $85 billion short.
