CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Cardinal Francis George celebrated 15 years as Archbishop of Chicago tonight at the Noche de Gala in Oakbrook Terrace.

His celebration of this milestone comes with uncertainty as he was just diagnosed with kidney cancer.

This would his second bout with the disease.

"I thought I licked something but I didn't. That isn't a good feeling," the cardinal said.

This is the archbishop's first public appearance since the news. He says he's in good spirits, but feeling the effects.

"The on biopsy was an extensive procedure so I feel a little weakened by that. There was general anesthesia. But, other than that I feel good, my appetite is good and I get tired a little bit."

The cardinal is hoping to win this fight with cancer, but he's aware of what the disease could mean.

"If this is a call to be with him for eternity than thats a welcomed call in that sense. But, it's also a fearful call because there's so much that's unknown."

He's been looking forward to retirement, but was not hoping for it to be this way.

"Even without cancer I envisioned...I don't know."
