CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Gunfire is ringing out again around Chicago, but police are trying to provide at least one small safety zone on the South Side and send a message.
At 9:30 p.m. Friday, eight teens were shot at the corner of 79th and Essex in what Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy describes as a shootout between two gangs.
"Law enforcement alone won't alone fix the problem. And I think last night proves it because 10 separate times in the hour before that shooting, we were on the scene."
The superintendent insists his officers are deployed in the right places and that the community needs to step up to help find a solution. McCarthyvisited the scene of the shootout Friday night to talk about solutions.
Earlier in the evening, McCarthy was speaking words of encouragement to the 120 children gathering for a night of camping for an event called ‘Peace in the Park After Dark' at Nat KingCole park.
The event remembers Officer Thomas Wortham who was shot and killed there. His father was on hand to urge the youngsters to stop the violence.
"If people come out and get involved in the community, I guarantee it will stop some of the violence."
This overnight camp is one event that aims to bring the people together in peace.
