CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The voters have spoken: An endangered Grevy's zebra born last Thursday at the Lincoln Park Zoo was named Kito, which is Swahili for "jewel." Visitors to the zoo can see him starting today.

The name received 2,400 votes, beating out Hanisi, Akili and Daktari, the three other Swahili names the Zoo selected.

"The name is fitting, as we sure think Kito is a treasure," General Curator Dave Bernier said in a statement. "Grevy's zebras are endangered in the wild, and we at Lincoln Park Zoo are proud to do our part in the conservation of this majestic species."

Mom and baby will be introduced to the rest of the herd in the next few weeks, according to the statement. Until then, visitors to the zoo can now see them in the Antelope & Zebra Area from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.

The foal is the second offspring for 5-year-old mom Adia and 6-year-old dad Clayton. The newborn's brother, Enzi, was born in 2010 and still lives at Lincoln Park Zoo.

Adia and Clayton are recommended to breed by the Grevy's zebra Species Survival Plan, which manages the zoo population of the endangered African animal.

Grevy's zebras have a gestational period of more than a year, so the staff at the zoo has been awaiting this arrival for a while.

"The anticipation has definitely been building, and we couldn't be happier with the new arrival," Bernier said in the statement. "Adia was a wonderful mother to Enzi, and she is being just as attentive, protective, and playful with her new offspring."
