DES PLAINES, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A man convicted of at least two felonies was charged Saturday after Cook County Sheriff's police officers found an AK-47 near his trailer home in unincorporated Des Plaines.
About 4:50 a.m., sheriff's police received a call from a man who said his neighbor punched him in the face during an argument at a trailer park in the 4000 block of Touhy Avenue, said sheriff's spokesman Frank Bilecki. The caller also said his neighbor might be armed with a rifle, Bilecki said.
A sheriff's officer arrived at the trailer park within minutes, Bilecki said, and the man told him that his neighbor might have an AK-47.
The officer immediately called for backup, Bilecki said, and officers set up a perimeter around the trailer park and began canvassing the area for the neighbor.
Officer found him hiding in a nearby bush, Bilecki said, and after being questioned, the neighbor allowed officers to search his trailer home.
Officers did not find any weapons inside, but an AK-47 was allegedly discovered in the grass behind the trailer, Bilecki said.
The neighbor—Timothy Bogacki, 32—had been convicted of at least two felonies in the past and was charged with a Class X felony for being a habitual criminal armed with a firearm, Bilecki said.
Bogacki was also charged with a Class 3 felony count of unlawful use of a weapon and two misdemeanor counts—one for reckless conduct and another for battery, Bilecki said.
The AK-47 was registered to Bogacki's wife, who was away on military duty, Bilecki said, adding that investigators believe she was stationed at a military training camp in Tennessee.
Bogacki is a self-admitted member of the Latin Kings gang, Bilecki said.
Officers did not find any other weapons, but an unloaded clip with no ammunition was discovered inside a white sock, Bilecki said.
Bogacki is scheduled to appear in bond court on Sunday, Bilecki said.
