CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A UIC student was robbed at gunpoint Thursday night near the school's campus on the Near West Side.

About 9:18 p.m. Thursday, the student was walking north from Harrison Street in the 500 block of South Oakley Avenue when she was approached by a man who displayed a handgun and demanded her cell phone and messenger bag, according to an alert from University of Illinois at Chicago Police.

The robber fled north and the student was not injured. The messenger bag was later recovered by police on Van Buren Street.

The suspect was described as a black man 20 to 25, 5-foot-9 with a dark complexion and short black hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt, black shorts, and was armed with a blue handgun.

UIC Police are warning students to coply with armed offenders whose intent appears to be property or valuables, as the victim did in this case.

The UIC Police/Chicago Police Joint Robbery Task Force is investigating.

Anyone with information should call UIC Police at (312) 996-2830.
