WINNETKA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Police are in the preliminary stages of an investigation involving inappropriate text messages and/or emails involving New Trier High School students.
A brief statement issued by the Winnetka police on Monday indicates that police are working with New Trier and that there is no other information available at this time, Pioneer Press is reporting.
District 203 Supt. Linda Yonke sent a letter to parents Friday night stating New Trier administrators were recently made aware of allegations that some students had transmitted text messages or emails containing "inappropriate pictures" to other students.
In her letter, Yonke said the district began an investigation and after "extensive initial interviews," referred the matter to Winnetka police. She said all parents of students interviewed by New Trier have been contacted about the issue.
"We know students may want to talk about this issue at home, and we hope families can use this opportunity to reinforce our internet safety messages and to discuss the consequences and permanency of actions involving the internet, social media, texting or other forms of electronic communication," Yonke said in the letter.
"We plan to work with parents and students to offer additional programs on the safe and responsible use of technology."
