Highway department truck crashes into Homer Glen house - My50 Chicago - Television - WPWR

A Homer Township Highway Department employee on Thursday was taken to Silver Cross Hospital after he possibly blacked out and crashed a township truck into a house in the 14000 block of Whirlaway Court in Homer Glen, Will County.

The truck driver and the homeowner both were taken to Silver Cross Hospital.

The driver, 53, told police he does not remember what happened, but believed he blacked out when he lost control of the vehicle while driving south on Will-Cook Road, near Derby Road, shortly before noon, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

The driver, whose identity was not released, ran through a couple of yards and knocked down trees and bushes before crashing into the southeast corner at the rear of a tri level home, near its dining room, she said.

A resident who was home at the time was shaken up by the incident and taken to the hospital as a precaution, Hoffmeyer said.

Township Highway Commissioner Mike DeVivo said the vehicle was an International 7400, a 21/2-ton dump truck.

"I don't know what happened. I have not had a chance to talk to the driver," he said Thursday afternoon.

He said the driver had some blood on his face, but he does not believe there was a lot of trauma.

The driver has worked for the highway department for more than two years, he said.

The homeowner was working with the township's insurance company and the home was being secured after the truck was safely removed without further damaging the home, DeVivo said.

The dump truck has body damage, but DeVivo said he won't know the full extent of the damage until the vehicle is inspected.
