A 23-year-old west suburban man has been ordered held without bond after being charged with what prosecutors called the "senseless" slaying of an 18-year-old man on Monday.
Judge Karen Wilson ordered Juan M. Cuellar of 10S710 Lilac Lane in Willowbrook held for the fatal shooting of Joshua Holmes, also of Willowbrook, according to DuPage County prosecutors.
Cuellar is charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the shooting about 6:30 p.m. Monday in unincorporated Willowbrook, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's office.
Witnesses told police they saw a white four-door vehicle approach Holmes near Honeysuckle Rose Lane and Hyacinth Lane, and someone inside opened fire, a release from the sheriff's office said. Holmes later died about 7:15 p.m. at Hinsdale Hospital.
Prosecutors claim that Holmes and two acquaintances were walking on Honeysuckle Rose Lane when a vehicle driven by Cuellar slowed down and Holmes approached. Cuellar then pulled a gun, pointed it out the passenger-side window and shot Holmes six times.
The investigation led authorities to Cuellar's parents' house, where he was taken into custody without incident, a release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office said.
"These senseless killings have got to stop," State's Atty. Robert Berlin said in a statement. "Day after day we hear stories of street violence that have claimed the life of yet another young person. People have got to learn that violence is never the answer. An 18-year-old boy has been taken from his family and the man accused of his murder is now in jail facing a potential life sentence."
Cuellar's 42-year-old mother, Elva M. Hernandez, was also charged with two counts of obstructing justice, sheriff's police said. She was ordered held on a $150,000 bond.
Cuellar's next court date is scheduled for Oct. 10 before Judge Daniel Guerin.
