Boy, 13, critically wounded in South Side shooting

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
A teenage boy was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot multiple times in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood Monday evening.
The 13-year-old was shot twice in the back about 7:05 p.m. in the 8600 block of South Aberdeen Street, police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.
He was riding a bicycle when two males appeared from a gangway and began shooting, News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
Paramedics took the boy from the 8600 block of South Carpenter Street -- one block east of the shooting -- to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition, the fire department said.
Police said the gunman approached on foot, opened fire and ran away.
The shots startled a woman on the block who was unwinding on her couch.
"I was watching TV flipping the channels trying to find something to watch and heard about six shots and I just pretty much ducked down and stayed on the floor for a couple of minutes and called my mom to make sure she's OK because she'd just left to go to the store," said the woman, who asked not to be named.
"And then I resumed trying to find something to watch on TV ... I would say this block is pretty quiet for the most part ... I didn't know anyone was actually shot."
Area South detectives are investigating but no one was in custody as of late Tuesday morning.
