A man was hit and killed by a freight train Friday night in west suburban Riverside, authorities said.
The man was hit by the train just east of grade crossing near Longcommon Road, according to a statement issued by Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel.
About 7:24 p.m., police received a call that train hit the man near the platform on the far south track, the statement said. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the man's body under one of the rail cars, the statement said, adding that the man was hit by an eastbound BNSF freight train.
The man's identity was being withheld as officials notify his family, Weitzel said in the statement, but the Cook County Medical Examiner's office described the victim, who was dead at the scene, as being in his 40s or 50s.
Officials closed vehicle and pedestrian traffic near the crossing for three hours, the statement said.
The incident caused delays for inbound and outbound trains on the Metra Burlington North Santa Fe line, officials said.
Trains were delayed approximately 40 to 60 minutes, according to a Metra service alert.
One track was open to allow some commuter trains through about 8:30 p.m., according to a Metra spokeswoman.
Investigators on Friday night continued to collect details regarding the circumstances surrounding the death, the police statement said.
