MIDLOTHIAN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A driver was hurt when a Metra train hit a vehicle Monday near the south suburban Midlothian station.
Witnesses said a silver Mazda minivan was traveling north on Crawford Avenue when the driver went through downed gates at a railroad crossing, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.
The crossing gate bounced over the top of the vehicle, which then slowed or stopped on the railroad tracks before being struck by the train, Reile said. The train engineer blew the horn four times to alert the driver before the crash.
One man was hurt but conscious after the accident, according to a release from Midlothian Deputy Police Chief Steve Zamiar.
An 86-year-old Midlothian man was hospitalized at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, Reile said.
The victim, who was the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an auto accident and disobeying a railroad signal, authorities said.
