On Wednesday, hundreds gathered of friends and their families gathered for a vigil to remember Devin Meadows. Even students who didn't know the football player feel the impact of his loss.
"A lot of kids are taking it really hard because we were all so close and he was such a spirited and he always kept everybody going," said one student. "We just didn't expect this to happen."
Many mourners came wearing white as many did at school earlier in the day.
Meadows was a member of the football, basketball and track teams at Metea Valley High School in Aurora.
Police say He was killed while riding in a car with 3 other 15-year-olds that crashed into a home early Tuesday morning.
As many left the vigil, through the sadness came a sense of unity.
"It truly showed how even though we're a new school and everything, we are a community and we will stick together in this time of mourning," said classmate Jordan Grant.
"We don't even go to his school, but even our school wore white to support," said Alexis Williams of Naperville Central. "It's like a Naperville mutual thing, we all want to show respect."
Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. The driver did not have license. Friends say there is a lesson to be learned here.
"Just make smart choices and be responsible for your own actions because life is too short and you just have to be prepared do whatever happens."
Aurora Police said no charges are being filed. Authorities are awaiting the results from the toxicology test to determine if the driver will be charged.
