Police urge Halloween revelers not to drive drunk

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Illinois government officials and the state police are asking Halloween revelers to "keep the party off the road" and not to drive drunk.

Over the past eight years, 31 people have been killed and more than 2,200 have been injured in crashes during Halloween. About 40% of those killed died in crashes that involved alcohol.

State Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider is urging people to designate a sober driver if they decide to attend events that serve alcohol.

State Police said Thursday they would be extra vigilant leading up to Halloween.

The Department of Transportation also advised those who've been drinking to take a taxi, call a sober friend or relative, or use public transportation.
