CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A 64-foot Colorado spruce tree owned by a northwest suburban family has been chosen as Chicago's 99th annual Christmas tree and will light up Daley Plaza starting next month.
Applicants submitted trees for consideration to the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events during the summer and early fall.
The Colorado spruce tree, owned by the Theiszman family of Prospect Heights was chosen; it will be cut down Thursday and delivered Friday evening to Daley Plaza, a statement from the city said.
Santa Claus will join Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Theiszmans to light the tree on Tuesday, Nov. 20, the release said. Dean Richards of WGN TV and Angelica Antondo of Univision News Chicago will emcee the ceremony, which will begin with a musical program at 4:30 p.m.
The ceremony will include the cast of the Goodman Theater's 35th anniversary performance of "The Christmas Carol," and the all-male vocalist group, Gentelman's Rule. The tree will be lit at 5 p.m.
