Illinois Democrats and Republicans came together to talk about a proposal they can both agree on: A new safe driving initiative.
Legislation will be proposed Tuesday to make sure every Illinois resident old enough to drive has a driver's license, including undocumented immigrants.
Governor Quinn and Mayor Emanuel are among the political heavyweights throwing their support behind a new immigrant-rights driving proposal.
The proposal aims to get undocumented immigrants licenses to drive and having them purchase insurance. Lawmakers said that the state needs for them to be able to get to work so they can be a positive impact on the economy – but to do it safely.
Senate President John Cullerton said undocumented drivers contribute to more than $660 million in insurance costs and unlicensed drivers cause 42% of all fatal crashes in Illinois.
About 250,000 immigrant drivers live in the state of Illinois, but are currently unable to get a license and insurance.
Lawmakers said having those drivers take the test will make our highways safer, that the judicial system is clogged with cases involving immigrants without driver's licenses and police could focus on more serious crimes if they don't have to deal with those cases.
The announcement will be made at Roosevelt High School on the North Side.
