SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

Some drivers saw a gruesome scene after police say two horses escaped from their fenced-in yard and were hit by cars.

The horses' owners say they were riding around the arena at Mescal Horse Park when something spooked them and they took off.

The horses bolted across Shea Boulevard near 68th Street. While in the roadway, they were each hit by separate cars.

Scottsdale Police say both horses were killed in the roadway from the impact.

The drivers and passengers in the cars weren't injured.

One of the drivers told FOX 10 he didn't see the horses coming until one of them T-boned his vehicle.

"I feel bad for the horses and the owners, I feel horrible about what happened," said driver Stephen Verlander. "By the time I realized what happened I stopped, got out and saw a second horse running down the street."

The horses weighed over a thousand pounds, but the impact was too great.

Eastbound Shea was restricted while authorities removed the animals from the road.

"We're gonna pick the horses up and take them for burial," said Jill Varichak, of Trails End Animal Removal.

The horses' owner was too upset to talk. "Sha" was a 7-year-old Egyptian Arabian gray horse and "Hope" was a 5-year-old Camelo quarterhorse.

The family also has other horses. They say their horses are like family to them.
